City Sprouts Is An Urban Farm With Thai Bistro Hidden In An Old Secondary School

City Sprouts urban farm on Henderson Road

For most of us, our secondary school days are a time that we look back on fondly. Oh, what we would give to be able to go back to the times of running into friends along the hallways, playing games during recess, and of course, stuffing our faces in the canteen.

City Sprouts, an urban farm tucked away in the former Henderson Secondary School, is the next best thing.

Like any school, the canteen is where it’s at. It’s no different at City Sprouts – the open dining space is the heart of the building and now houses Atmosphere, a Thai bistro serving all your spicy faves. Think seafood tom yum soup ($16.80), green papaya salad ($13.80), and crab fried rice ($16.80).

They also serve hot pots like Thai Army Hot Pot ($39.80), which takes inspo from the Korean budae jjigae but served with ingredients like MAMA instant noodles, crispy pork belly, and otah. For something more decadent, the Signature Lobster Tom Yum Hot Pot ($49.80) is their take on the popular Jeh O Chula giant MAMA noodle dish, but is topped with a full lobster.

City Sprouts is also an urban farm that leases out parts of its farm space to local agritech partners. In simpler words, City Sprouts is all about sustainable farming and agricultural practices.

Tenants occupy the space on a rotational basis. Currently, the 3 tenants are Singrow, a vertical strawberry farm, The Little Rice Company, Singapore’s only rice grower, and Bewilder, a green design studio that’s all about mushrooms. More than just growing them and displaying them, they even sell them as bouquets, which you can buy to surprise someone special.

They also hold regular workshops that centre around sustainability and living a more eco-friendly lifestyle. These kid-friendly events will show you and your young ones how to compost using food scraps and even DIY-ing your own aquarium in a jar. You can also sign up for a farm tour that’ll give you a behind-the-scenes look at how farms work.

Look out for future events on the City Sprouts website.

When the weekend rolls around, it can be tough to fill up the 2 short days with activities that don’t involve screens or lazing around. With June holidays now in full swing, you’ve got your work cut out for you to find fun, stimulating activities to keep the kids entertained. With plenty to see, do and eat, City Sprouts is certainly a place worth visiting.
